The Royal Marine statue is made of bronze and stands approximately 8 feet high. The stone plinth upon which the statue stands is made from locally sourced granite. This too is approximately 8 feet high. The decreasing-in-size rock formations, which are visible in the photograph on this page, will provide the surface upon which those that die whilst serving at 42 Commando, will be recorded and remembered. It is estimated that this design will last for 30-40 years, if not longer.

The small circular sculptures/designs which can be seen on each of the end rocks, have been cast in order to remember particular conflicts so that the Memorial Garden does not become Afghanistan focussed. The two that you can see in the photograph depict a Royal Marine during the Malaya campaign and the Northern Ireland conflict.

The statue has been affectionately called 'Marine Dewerstone' by the young marines of the Unit. It is an entirely apt name for it is that which he is looking at in the distance over his shoulder. The sculptor, Roger Dean, has captured a reflective pose and aura perfectly - perhaps suggesting that 'Marine Dewerstone' is looking back at the patrol he has just finished or perhaps to a fallen colleague that did not make it back.
